Default Time Signatures (Warning-requires some theory!)

I want to set my meter(time sig) to 5/8

I want an Orchestral Snare drum to play (BOLD): 1,(2,3) / 1,(2,3) / 1,(2),3 / (1),2,(3) / 1,2,3 /

(Easier to count as: ONE two three, ONE two three, ONE two, ONE two, ONE two, ONE TWO THREE)

So, I want the beat to divide into 3's as if it were a COMPOUND meter(6/8, 9/8, 12/8)

When I set a 5/8 meter, I can't get the grid to divide into 3 on each beat, no matter how I set it.
The only way is to set 4/4 and set the grid to triplets(1/8 note) -Which then obviously puts all the bar lines out of sync?

I think the way the grid behaves is WRONG

I understand your problem but in a way it makes sence I guess and you can only blame the software 'that' much.

how about if you devide it into 16th triplets. The snare drum example you described would make it 16th triplets in a 5/8 bar.

Hope it makes sence ?

Ok. I got it...
Something weird was happening to my session that made the grid go all screwy.

I re-launched PT and set the the grid to 1/4 note triplet and time sig of 5/4 and that looks right...

You wouldn't believe what I was getting before I re-launched PT.
I guess Tools went all 'Jazz' on me

to me that looks like 5/4 with 8th note triplets.

(3) 8th note tuplets in the time of (2) 8ths.

set meter to 5/4
set grid to 1/8th triplet

works exactly as you want. I just tried it.

BTW -- i just went through "tuplet hell" for a score in Finale... mostly operator error, so join the crowd.

These are good solutions but Id like to point out that I hate how Protools shows the incorrect grid lines in SLIP mode when in a count of anything other than straight time. Switch to GRID mode and you see your triplet subdivisions. Switch back to SLIP mode for doing free edits while trying to LOOK at your gray grid lines, and the grid defaults back to an 8th or qtr note subdivision, which is WRONG from your actual subdivisions when using triplets, 6/8 time, or dotted 8ths. Anyone see what Im saying? Verrryyy annoying..

Yes, Mt. Everest, I have always disliked that.

I have to agree. Why not have the same grid lines in 'slip', but just not snap to it? Weird.

Exactly! The toggle should be "snap to grid or not snap to grid" not "show and snap to grid
or: don't show and don't snap" It's just wrong the way it is now.

Its things like this that really baffle me as to why Digi won't fix a simple graphical thing like that. I think EVERY PT user would agree that it would just make sense to have the grid always be drawn correctly, regardless of what mode you are in.

Digi??

this is one of those little things that I auto-pilot around, but now that it's being mentioned, count me in for a vote to change (fix) it.
