Input Monitoring with non-HD PT10 Advice ?

Ok, apologies as this problem is profoundly basic but I'm trying to get confirmation that this is just what you deal with if you don't have HD and not something I'm doing wrong individually. (I have PT 10 on OSX 10.6 + an Mbox 2 from an earlier LE rig....Mac Pro....I used to be on HD so I'm backwards handicapped)

I know no HD = no input monitoring and I need to record-enable my mixdown track to hear its aux input track. In my case I have to actually record to hear my mixdown track, not just record-enable, but go into recording. Curious if that's just how it goes for non-HD?

If so, does it make sense that I route my Submix Aux track to normal output to hear it and do my mixing...then before I lay back I change my routing so I'm routing Submix Aux track - > Mixdown Audio / Layback track...then go into record and record my final mix?

It works but I am looking for a better method that I'm hoping I'm just too stupid to have found on my own.

Disregard the n key comment I read something wrong in your question, however option + k allows input monitoring
