Default The Midi Side

Forgive me, I'm away from my Pro Tools for a few days but have a question.

Does anyone use the midi side of LE much?
I'm thinking of getting back into sequencing and want to know if LE is up to my needs.

Can you loop, quantize, transpose midi in LE?
Or should run something like Logic instead & if so, can logic use the 001's midi ports?

You definately can’t loop in PT. That’s the biggest limitation midi-wise.

What is your definition of looping for midi ?
I loop parts in midi all the time. For example, a would set up two or four bar phrase and build up lets say a drum part using the midi merge while it loops.

Well now,,that all depends what you want to loop,,you can build a track drum machine syle by selecting MIDI merg,,when you are done making your part you can then copy it as many times as you want,,you can also edit these copies any way you want,,you can't select a MIDI region and have it loop indefinatly for,,say,,4 bars,,and then record a second track for 8,,with out copying the first region,,i think you can do this in LOGIC and CUBASE,,but not in PT,,

Hi Mixer -

I use the midi functions in PT more and more these days...I've been getting into it pretty deep, and to my surprise, I'm finding PT's midi functions quite adequate.

You can quantize and transpose as well as do lots of other stuff like midi merge, split notes, edit velocities, etc....

I also use loop playback to build a drum pattern using midi merge (as smmdrum has already pointed out). If this is what you mean by "loop", then yes, you can certainly do this. You can also build arrangements quite easily as UIOP has pointed out...just cut, paste, and edit.

If you are referring to sample-based looping, you will have to look into another piece of software. Depending on your computer platform, there are a host of options including Acid, Refuse, Battery, Kontakt, etc....

Good luck, and feel free to post any other PT/midi questions you may have...I'm learning quite a bit about it these days...

Holla@ya!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">This is what I meant also.
In PT you have to copy and paste many times if you want to record longer audio together with the loop. There is a "repeat paste function" that facilitates it, though.
