Default PT10 TC-chase locking speed

Hi,

recently tried running PT10.1 (HDX) as a LTC slave in the mixing theatre with disk-cache on.
Compared to when I used PT9 in the theater I think PT10 was much slower at locking to LTC.

Wasn't PT10 supposed to lock almost instantly because of the disk-cache feature? It seemed like lock-times got worse.

I thought it was a bit disappointing.

In our setup it takes between 2-4 seconds. Last time I mixed with PT9 it would lock within about 1 second 2 seconds max.
Still quite slow compared to the old MMR-8/DD-8 days but OK'ish.

Anyone else getting better figures with PT10 as an LTC slave?

Thanks,

frank

Hi Frank

Why not run PT as master and slave desk automation - instant audio!
I always ran my my AMS Audiofiles like this when not inside a Logic , DFC was a step back compared to the logic series automation.

Cheers

Because there are a bunch of other rigs and machines that need to lock as well (2 other PTs, one being a stem recorder controlled via 9-pin, a Pyxis for HD playback and finally the remote-control for punching in and record-enable on the console)
Would be quite an effort to turn one of the PT-rigs into the studio-master.

However: It ran OK under 9. Just wondered why disk-cache seems to be slower than PT9. Somehow I thought it would lock WAY faster because it doesn't have to read audio from disk every time.

Frank.

Hi Frank,

just quickly tested this out of curiosity (I haven't worked with PT as a slave for quite some time now. PT was never quick to sync).
I loaded a stereo 50min documentary I just finished and sent TC to a PT HD2 Westmere system with 24GB RAM.
I have the same lock times as you; between 2 and 4 seconds...terrible!

Nuendo, Akai DD systems, Bonsaidrive are all much quicker than PT at this, so we always made PT master. But you are right, the lockup time is worse in PT10 then before, which seems weird with the RAM cache and overal PT10 snappiness. It's like Avid thinks this is not important anymore...
Satellite link works much quicker of course, but I don't know if you find a solution to your setup in that case. I would look into making the stem recorder TC and Satellite master and slave the other PT systems and console to that, driving the PT stemrecorder maybe with MMC from the desk or Colin Broad (if at all possible, your re-recording mixer might not like it).

Greetings,

Thierry

FWIW I wouldn't expect the cache to have much effect on lock speed.

I'd report that to customer service as a pretty serious bug. There may not be that many people slaving it these daze.

There is a known issue where locking to timecode has some poor interactions with the Disk Cache.

We are working on resolving this issues.

Thanks for the update Bob. I'm glad to read you are still involved in the Satellite team.

Greetings,

Thierry
