using instrument track vs. midi+auxilary track

Is there any benefits and/or differences with using a midi track with auxilary track vs. using an instrument track? it seems that all the tutorials i have don't really get into the instrument tracks much. they all just show how to use midi with auxilary tracks.

The benefits are that it combines them into one track. Less confusion, less mix real estate. You can also play an instrument on an instrument track without having to be in record mode. There's more, but those are the basics of it.
