Are Digi003 line inputs TRS?

The specs say "balanced", so XLR out from a preamp to TRS into the 003 line input should bypass the onboard preamp - right?

The title question: "Are Digi003 line inputs TRS?" Yes they are 1/4" TRS jacks.

Do you mean line-input or DI input?

The line inputs 5-8 have no associated preamps and are just line inputs. The "DI" inputs 1-4 go though a preamp and there is no way to remove that from this circuit (you can choose to use the Mic or DI but in both both cases the preamp circuit is involved). If you need to you can take a line in input to a DI input, the gain may be a bit higher than you want.

And DI 1-4 are balanced. If you connect say an unbalanced guitar the mono 1/4" phono plug will just short the negative signal side to ground.

All this is covered in the manual (maybe not clearly enough, but it is in there). And has been mentioned on there forums many times before.

You may get more useful advice if you said what you are tying to do.

I don't believe you can bypass the pre's

All correct^^^, but you can feed the line output of an external preamp to the TRS inputs(all 8 of them) without issue(I do it every day here, with balanced cables)
