Default HD users-please post your reviews here.

I thought I would start a thread that would give us the direct feedback of the new HD users. As all of us old time users are contemplating making the big jump, it would be nice to have a concise page of the HD boys and how it is stacking up against their Mix Plus rigs. I am directing this post primarily to former Mix Plus users so we can reference against what we have owned and gone into debt for. Many of us are going to have to add $15k+ to the investment we have already made, so user input in very important.

Would love to know things like (please answer as many as possible):

1.) What bugs are you getting...more/less crashes?
2.) How are your updated plugs working/are you really getting double DSP power?
3.) What software & hardware are you using to back-up your massive 88.2k through 192k sessions?
4.) Are you using firewire or SCSI
5.) Is there anything you miss about your Mix Plus system?
6.) What computer are you using (OS as well) with which CPU?
7.) How's your track count?
8.) Is your PT's boot time faster/slower/same?
9.) Any issues with 3rd party converters?
10.) Are you still using FWB with HD?
11.) Has your MIDI issues improved in HD and 5.3?
12.) Is DirectConnect better/worse?
13.) Will you use the clock in PT's now or continue to AyrdSync/Apogee, etc.?
14.) Does 44.1/48K sound better than your Mix+ system did at 44.1/48K
15.) Have you A/B'd the dithered mixer with the 5.3 mixer?
16.) Your birthdate, zipcode, sexual preference or interests not required.

I'll be a bit of a pain in the ass with this post by bumping it if it starts getting buried too far in the heap, but it's for a good cause (Digi shouldn't mind if the reviews are anything like carlones: http://duc.digidesign.com/cgi-bin/ub...=16&t=011392.)

Thanks, looking forward to the input

I am not a Digi dealer or seller for the paranoid folks out there (check out some my posts and you'll see I'm not always Digi friendly). I'm am just a musician that has made a major investment in a system that is most likely now going into the dumper if I don't reinvest, so I am just trying to find out if I should buy or sell. It's the computer game we play when we make music with it.

If we all could keep this post as focused as possible, it could be very effective. I would be more than happy to add new questions to the list above that you all add. I'm a 2 time a day DUC guy, so we could make this a mini HD BBS.

I will add DUC post links to this page as well.

Here's an issue with plugins http://duc.digidesign.com/cgi-bin/ub...&f=16&t=011412

If we could keep comimg back to this post to consolidate the issues we could maintain the overview. I'm not trying to seize the DUC...I'm just trying to keep the developments in one place. Use this post as the link point as issues and posts get buried until Digi start an HD forum.

I dont have the HD sytem but i would really like to see some posts with opinions.

It seems very strange that no one has posted any comments about their HD system yet.

Some guys have had it for a couple of weeks now. Where are they???

I guess we are too busy playing with our new toys: but here is mine:

1.) What bugs are you getting...more/less crashes?
no crashes so far

2.) How are your updated plugs working/are you really getting double DSP power?
-I have an HD3 and still haven't used up the core, let alone any of the process cards. However, I would be using more plugins but they are not available yet. The plugs i have sound pretty good though and work well.

3.) What software & hardware are you using to back-up your massive 88.2k through 192k sessions?
Only really tested at the 192 sample rate, haven't really done any real sessions. However, I am planning to backup with a DVD superdrive. I am just using firewire and it is a very cheap medium to use, so storage isn't really and issue for me.

4.) Are you using firewire or SCSI
Fire wire, no problems whatsoever. I can play 30+ tracks on one drive. I think PT5.3 has updated the ability to share sessions over multiple drives. Haven't had to do this yet though.

5.) Is there anything you miss about your Mix Plus system?
I didn't have one, this is my first TDM system.

6.) What computer are you using (OS as well) with which CPU?
G4 733 OS 9.2.2 I don't know what CPU?

7.) How's your track count?
I have had over 30 traks on one firewire drive. I think you can play 128 (48k)at once but you probably have to share it over several drives. I think at 192 you are limited to 24 tracks.

8.) Is your PT's boot time faster/slower/same?
This is my first TDM but the boot time is very fast. The only lag seems to be initializing the control24 which is only about 10 sec's or less.

9.) Any issues with 3rd party converters?
Haven't really tried any. However, I have used and ADAT throught the lightpipe and this works fine. I also had a bass pod pro connected to the S/PDIF that worked ok. I preffered the pod analog out through the 192 converter though, as this converter sounds very sweet indeed.

10.) Are you still using FWB with HD?
don't know what FWB is?

11.) Has your MIDI issues improved in HD and 5.3?
Haven't really done much midi yet

12.) Is DirectConnect better/worse?
Mine installed with no problems whatsoever. Just ran the digitest and I was good to go

13.) Will you use the clock in PT's now or continue to AyrdSync/Apogee, etc.?
I have no plans to get a third party clock

14.) Does it sound better than in 44.1/48K
YES!!!!!!!!!!

15.) Have you A/B'd the dithered mixer with the 5.3 mixer?
I prefer the dithered mixer, but I didn't really do an A/B test though. And it could also sound better due to the power of suggestion.

16.) Your birthdate, zipcode, sexual preference or interests not required.
8/1/64, 22102, chicks, and chicks, - oh not required doooh! ( 8^(l)+<!

Philip,

1.)When you say you used the demo "as a comparison to my Mix+/888/", what do you mean by that? Did you compare it side by side with your old 888's in another rig that you were running the demo on, or were you running 888's off the legacy port then A/B'ing the demo through your new converters?

2.) What do you use as a master clock?

Thanks

I just finished the install last night. HD2/96I/O../C24. Using the demo as a comparison to my Mix+/888/this is miles ahead in clarity. I just received a new project this morning and will post the outcome along the way. Rest assured, this system is sweet.
Anyone want to buy some mix cores??
Digi, You did it again. THANKS!!!
