Default Can\'t use 6th Mix chip?

Well, this is a total newbie question but:

I'm using a PT 24/Mix system and it doesn't seem to be able to use the 6th chip. When I check the performance monitor it will say:

chip 1: mix engine
2&3: 24 bit mixer
4: virus
5: waveshell
6: nothing

but if I try to add say a C4 it says insufficient DSP. How come it doesn't use 6?

The mix system has 3 different types of chips with varying amounts of DSP. The C4 needs the most powerful chip so if all of those chips are being used it'll tell you that there's not enough dsp. If you tried instantiating a simple eq it would use the 6th chip with no trouble.

HTH.

Is there a way I can force the other stuff (virus, waveshell) to hop on the other chip? I'm only using 13% on one for the virus and 60% for the waveshell.

Try de-activating the plugs to open up that chip that is needed. ( command+control click on plug-in name in insert of mix or edit window ) Do this plug by plug ...until you can load that plug ...then reactivate the plugs. It may not be possible...depending on the plug-ins used. Try converting some TDM plugins to RTAS....that should do it.

If everything works...drag the track with the C4 to the top of the edit window ( left-most in mix window )...then save the session. This way...when the session opens again....it will load faster without having to reshuffle plug-in allocation.

( there is a way to pre-allocate chips to 100% to 'force' a plug-in to load to a different chip....in the System usage window...click ( or command+click) on the gas guage.....it should turn red and will be 100% used. Now load the said plug.) There are DRAM and SRAM chips on Mix farms.....some plugs like reverb require a particular type of chip.
