Default Importing WAVs

Anyone know why, when I imported a WAV file into PT, it was so loud it clipped? I can't seem to import it and bring down the level of the import. This is a WAV that was converted from an mp3, in case that might have anything to do with it.

But it seems like if I convert an mp3 to a WAV, then listen to the WAV and it sounds fine, it ought to import into PT fine, don't you think?

But in case you're right, do you recommend any particular (free, preferably) converter?

If the files you are importing have been normalized to "0" you will get the red clip light on all those files. Remember that in digital -18 is 0VU in analog and I've noticed that the PTLE clip light comes on when it hits 0. I've had this happen when I import say a project from a VS880 where the files were burned off into Soundforge and then normalized before they were given to me. In these cases I've renormalized the files to 80 or 90 percent to reduce them in level a bit so they won't clip LE.
