Internal CD writer in G4?
Does anyone know whether this is possible? I have a 400Mhz G4 so there's a free drive bay, but the G4 documentation seems to imply that this is reserved for the optional zip drive. Anyone shed any light?
Cheers, matt. |

Re: Internal CD writer in G4?
I looked into this, the G4 case kinda sucks. The ZIP bay has metal flanges that needlessly exclude a 5.25 form factor.
A CDR will not fit. |

Re: Internal CD writer in G4?
The Zip bay is that size in order to clear the heat sinks on the G4 Processor. Pull the drive tray out and close the door and you'll see what I mean.
FWIW, I swapped out the internal DVD drive with a EIDE burner. I likethe DVD RAM drive, so I'll probably buy a FireWire case for the CDR drive at some point. Either that or a SCSI case and an approved SCSI card. |

Re: Internal CD writer in G4?
I looked into that, you have two choices:
1) replace your original CD-ROM with your CDW, but then you'd better get a bootable CDW, in case of a serious crash.... 2) get ready for some serious surgeon work and buy tools to "mod" your G4 so it can accept a second CD drive. I stuck with the 3rd choice, keep it outside. |
