Default \"Unable to locate Digidesign 002 rack hardware\"

Hey everyone,

I'm using:

Mac OS X 10.3.9
Pro Tools LE 6.4
002 rack - model MX002RK

It worked beautifully for over a year. After moving to another house and then reconnecting the equipment, I started having issues. The application would load and recognize the hardware, but cut out and disconnect during a session. Now, each time I attempt to start Pro Tools, the message "Unable to locate Digidesign 002 rack hardware" appears and the application fails to launch.

On the console, the solid green 44.1 sample rate light and solid red mute light appear. The 1394 firewire indicator light does not show up.

Is anyone having the same issue or have information on how to resolve? I'm at a loss and hope to avoid shipping the equipment off to a repair shop if possible.

Many thanks,

Brian

sounds like the dreaded power harness issue. If you do a search for those terms you will see what I mean. The power supply inside the 002 is faulty, but it can be fixed DIY. I have simply disconnected the clips on each of the circuit boards inside my 002r and cleaned the contact points and re-seated the clips. Works for me. Otherwise Digi will send you a new one, no q's asked with instructions on how to replace.

when you power up your 002 unit you should hear it clicking 3 times. If it clicks all the time or if there is no clicking at all it could be the POWER HARNESS issue. As already said call Digi and they will send you a free replacement kit.

If it's not the POWER HARNESS issue it could be burnt out Firewire ports caused by hot plugging.
In this case the the Firewire ports have to be exchanged by a Digi approved repair shop ($$$)

have you tried resetting your machine's FW ports? Have you eliminated your cable?

Thanks. I will try eliminating the cable first as recommended by other posts (should have tried this already) and then the DIY power harness repair.

Just try another device (FW Hard Drive etc.) and see if it works on the same ports before trying to reset the bus.

Slim's totally right - try another device in that port... I figured you already did that though.

Anyway, if you find you still need to reset, its real easy... turn everything off, unplug your FW devices, unplug your computer - wait 30 minutes, re-plug, turn everything back on!

So after going through the reset process everything started working again. Then, about 10 seconds into playing a session in Pro Tools, the playback stopped - and I got the cannot communicate with Digi hardware message...

Knowing this, what are your thoughts?

Thanks!
