Adding a VU to a D command
I am thinking about adding a VU meter to my D Command.
Is there anything inside the meterbridge to the right of the timecode window? VU is for my cue bus, so I know I am sending signal when I dial it up... And I like real VU meters! Brian at The Hideout www.thehideoutstudios,com |

Re: Adding a VU to a D command
I have an ICON Shelf on the back of my D-Control, but from what I recall when I had the back "grates" off, it appeared to be basically hollow... not sure if there are ribbon cables going to the existing meters though, or if they come up from the bottom.
Do you see anywhere, once you have the "grates" off to get the back panel off and going through that way, rather than start from the front? I'd also make sure you scored the "plastics" on the front face with a sharp utility knife before Dremeling, cause they might possibly melt. Prepping with masking tape over your cuts might not be a bad either.

Re: Adding a VU to a D command
I'm curious if you've given a thought to where you're going to tap the audio for the meter since the only analog audio in the D-Command is the headphone output.
I'm guessing that you'd want to mult the desired output from the X-Mon and send that properly buffered to drive the meter.

Re: Adding a VU to a D command
The source will be a simple patch point normalled to the bus for the cue but could in reality be used for anything.
Should be interesting www.thehideoutstudios.com no commas |

Re: Adding a VU to a D command
"virtually useless!"
Hardly......... I keep six calibrated on top of my center vid-monitor. I derive their input from my monitor controller/switcher input-thru (THX-CC4)(Active trims via Gains audio Bal>unbal) Most meters actually do tell you something. You just need to know what their saying. As far as cutting into the D-Command, I would opt for a meter bridge but if it's hollow, customization of an audio console is not unusual. Good luck with the mod. |
