Is it better to SRC up or down? Dilema.
I have a session that was recorded at 44.1K. I just received some piano tracks for this session that were recorded at 48k. I imagine the mixer will prefer 48k as well, but it is what it is.
Is it better to convert the piano down to 44.1k or convert the session up to 48k? Does either way create less artifacts? Is there a diff. between doing a 'save copy in' (and selecting 48k) and creating a new session at 48k and importing session data?

Re: Is it better to SRC up or down? Dilema.
In the big picture the less processing of this nature you do, the better. I would import the piano track into the existing 44.1 session rather than perform SRC on all of your existing tracks in the session.
I do not think there'll be any difference in the two methods you describe in terms of how the SRC is performed. I think the mixer will be fine with a 44.1 session.

If you have one track with different sample rate, convert that.

Umm, no. The less SRC you do the better. Even if the final delivery is 48k, you should mix it 44.1 and convert the one track to fit the session. Then once finished, convert the final mixdown to whatever sample rate needed. That is two SRC, compared to however much tracks you have in the session to begin with.

Re: Is it better to SRC up or down? Dilema.
If you think: less effort = better...
Payment is not good enough... The Answer is going up or down, the less tracks possible. If you love music above all things, Going up... 96KHz 24-bit... Higher sample rate ... Is called higher for a reason. But.. If you have PT non-HD, non-CPTK, going up, the track limit need to be aware. If you have non-HD/CPTK probably don't have the Tweakhead algorithm. Working at final sample rate is better in that scenario/situation. If you hate competition... Say: work at 22k or 32k maximum, is better. LOL Jajajajajaja |

Re: Is it better to SRC up or down? Dilema.
Where it really matters is what sample rate you record. Using 96k "just because you can" may avoid some AD converter imperfections, and then downsampling to 48k for mixing doesn't lose quality in the audio files.
The other way around, recording 48k and then upsampling to 96k for mixing is only good if you use plugins that really work better at 96k, such as gates that sound more analog because they're not "clicking" when it opens. But 44.1/48 I'd say best to do as few SRC as possible.

1176 at fast attack too. If my math is right, the fastest attack of 20 microseconds is faster than a sample rate of 44.1 kHz (approx 23 microseconds between samples) and 48 kHz (approx 21 microseconds between samples)

Re: Is it better to SRC up or down? Dilema.
I record everything I can at 96 and never below 48.
In the real world video is where the best quality playback gear is likely to be found and anything serious will be made into a video.

Does that imply that downsampling is better in general?
