Scroll wheel operating differently in 2021.3

I've just moved from PT Ultimate 2019.5 to 2021.3

I used to be able to move clips and selection in / out points whilst scrolling horizontally and vertically using my trackballs scroll wheel.

Now this functionality appears to not exist, so that as soon as I touch the scroll wheel either the clip or selection is dropped.

Quite frustrating as I'd got used to the previous behaviour and find it a lot quicker and more accurate than just moving my cursor to the edge of the edit screen and letting PT scroll for me.

Does anyone know if this is a preference somewhere or is this now just the expected behaviour?

OK, so I've realised this is an Apple thing not a PT thing.

The same thing happens in Finder too, so when I grab a file and try to use the scroll wheel to scroll up it just releases the mouse click as soon as the scroll wheel is touched.

Quick update in case anyone comes across this with the same issue.

It was a driver issue with the Kensington trackball software. I uninstalled it and installed Steer Mouse instead and now everything works properly again.

SteerMouse is GREAT.

I was going to suggest, as I encountered this issue a few months ago.

I really like the chords and modifiers for accessing more shortcuts. Mostly I just give myself access to more keyboard edit-focus commands so I don't have to bounce my wrist and look at the keyboard as often.

Hahaha, when typing the letter "." takes too long you know you've been using Pro Tools for a long time.

PT 2022.7, Mac M1, Monterey 12.3.1


My trackball's scroll functions are now slightly bollixed. In the latest Kensingtonworks, I can set the wheel to scroll edit window up/down, and Shift-scroll right/left to go forward/backward on the timeline (and vice versa) as I've done for years.


But now, Option-scroll to zoom in/out has reversed from how it worked for me for years.


Anyone else have this problem?



Maybe Steermouse will fix it.

Yes I did, and apologies for not posting an update.

I simply went into the Mac's mouse preferences and Unchecked "Scroll direction: natural" and bang, all is as it used to be.
