Default Mobile workstation is dead need new one

Ok guys, Ive read and read about the specs on laptops for PT 8. Curious, could I just go to worst buy or micro center and find a machine that would work if I get a firewire external HD for audio? I think that the tweeker geeker idiots at worst buy would probably give me a stupid look if I asked them about a firewire HD with a oxford chipset. Sorry I havent had time to read up on whats going on with Win 7. I will be doing that. I mite not be able to find one with vista.

My area 51 finaly died a horrible death.
I have PT 8 Mbox 2 pro.

Greg

Avoid VIsta and go with Win 7 anyway.
E-sata is a viable alternative. External Firewire is tricky, every component has to be exact or it won't work.
I found a nice way to make an external FW drive...www.byteccstore.com. Look at the 720-series external fw case. Dirt cheap, has the Oxford 911 in it. Slap in a (here's the tricky part) 7200-rpm IDE drive, format it NTFS, and go to work. IF you can still get an IDE drive, they're getting scarce.

Ah but Microcenter has a whole self of them, or at least mine does.

I dont have a specific suggestion but if the notebook has a Intel CPU and chipset it would be helpful and far more likely to be compatible. I would definitely recommend eSATA over FW for the audio drive since FW is extremely problematic if its not a Macbook.

Greg 32bit Vista is currently approved and should work just fine. The biggest thing right now would be to find one thats 32bit instead of 64bit. 64bit is still in early beta. Unfortuneatly your going to find that almost anything you look at is going do come with a 64bit version of Windows.
