Default to grease or not to grease... XP2400 and volcano cool mod...

when assembling the fan and processor, is it necessary to use the thermal grease or not? The cool mod came with a small tube of it.

YES

The thermal grease is what transfers the heat from the core to the sink. It makes about an 80 degree difference on AthXP chips (i.e. NECCESARY)

Apply only a small thin layer over the top of the processor though in the small raised box area.

A must. Just follow the fold out instructions you received. Make sure to follow the pics as it can fit on the wrong side of the cpu and appear to be tight, but you will see 80c-90c. Thin layer as Allen suggested.
