i have been seeing it less and less in studios where signed artists are working

Re the Avalon vs a 1073, try them both and buy the one you like. I spent a solid 8 hours shooting out mics with a friend and he had the Avalon and a Vintech 273. We tracked 8 mics thru both preamps. In the end, we pretty much agreed on which mics were better and worse, but he liked the Avalon better, while I liked the Vintech better. At the end of the day, either one is capable of a solid recording.

the avalon vibe is like, old school to me, and not where its cool again lol

Personal preference, the avalon sound just bothers me now,

like an annoying gf lmaoooo

I literally just set mine up. After my 5.1 started slowing down. Hdx cards Inside mac pro. I have 3 in mine. But I got a 16 core, 192g ram, w5700x gpu, 8tb ssd. I got the rack mount mac pro because I have it inside a machine room. Incidentally it was right around 15k.

I am using a groove tubes vipre and glory compressor with a c800g now. Instead of avalon. Sometimes I'll patch in a 1176 before the glory.

If there is one piece of useful information in relation to outboard studio gear is that 'everything is cyclical and it is best to buck the current tread'.

If something is off trend and therefore prices are depressed then I would be buying them up now, as they will come back in fashion when the next batch of students graduate.

If prices are depressed and I had a device I wouldn't sell either.

I still see loads of Avalon gear in studios, being used all the time though, I am not sure I agree that they are currently out of fashion.
