Any way to get more than 256 MIDI tracks?

Hey guys,

Is there a workaround or any solution for the 256 MIDI track limitation? Setting up MIDI templates can often involve well over 256 tracks. They likely wouldn't all be used simultaneously, but they all need to be in the session.

If you are on HD then you should have your extra 128 Instrument Tracks to use.

Thanks...is there any way to have the instrument tracks use MIDI outputs? I/O is audio on a instrument track. These setups typically use external sounds a la gigastudio, kontakt, play, etc. etc. though obviously some of this could be done on the same machine via VIs on an instrument track.

This seems like kind of a lame limitation on an HD system. Logic, Cubase, DP, etc. all do way more MIDI tracks...

Yes you can, it's just the marriage of a MIDI and an AUX. If you show the "Instrument" component in your mix or edit window that were you would assign your MIDI outs. Glad I could be of help.

On a side note all the above mentioned DAWS were first sequencers before audio, we didn't get Instrument Tracks until PT 7. It was very much made as an audio editor.

I know PT is audio first, and am THRILLED they're catching up on the MIDI front, but we can't ever be satisfied, can we? haha...seriously, would love to see them up the MIDI count to 512 or something...in the meantime, that instrument track thing should help a lot! Thanks!

Oh, one quick thought...does using instrument tracks take up voices on the HD cards? Seems like they would...so if I have 128 instrument tracks, I'm only left with 64 (or whatever) voices left for audio tracks, plugins, etc?

Is that right? I'm always confused about the voice usage...

No they won't eat up voices unless you have RTAS VI's or plugins on them.

Haahahahaaaa.... I wanted to ask the exact same question.
You would need five separate Orchestra yet you will still have spare MIDI track left!
