I remember reading about the name change on April 1st and thinking “Messing with one’s established business name… that’s a pretty gutsy April Fools joke.” Needless to say, I was shocked when I later saw that they were indeed serious about it. It looks very much like someone fell asleep during the classes on branding and its value — not to mention that “Sonnox” sounds like something you take when you need help… falling asleep.

PS: Let me know when that top marketing gig becomes available — it should be worth a couple of years out of my current life. (And I’ll do a better job of it while actually being asleep.)

They're no longer part of Sony UK, so continuing to use the name was not an option.

So now they’re a subsidiary of what, Sony InterGalactic?
Regardless… Sonnox?! Yikes!

All of which brings to mind the following (*)…

"What shall we call our son so he does not get the s••t kicked out of him at school?"
“We shall call him Engelbert!"
"Good, that'll work!"

(* With thanks to Eddie Izzard)

i think its pretty obvious. They're not under Sony anymore but need to maintain a name that people recognise. Of course they wouldnt have chosen that name if they were a startup. But they're not and they need to keep people aware of who they were.

I'm afraid they're off the market -another management triumph:-(

I got this reply when I emailed Sony, sorry Sonnox (dreadful name):-

Hi

I am afraid Sony have kept the rights to the Restoration Tools which means we can no longer sell it.

Regards

Adam

I used to think more of Sony as a company for having the Oxford plugins. Now I'm just glad I do not have the restoration bundle yet. What happens to those who own the bundle and want an upgrade to UB?

Oxford was never Sony to begin with, it's an English company. Oxford UK was bought by them in the 90's when Sony gave a crap about audio and wanted the OXF-3 digital console that those guys were building. Sony Plugins has always been those guys coding stuff in the UK. This is the logical next step for Sony to completely dismantle their audio departments.
