Default Is a CLEAN INSTALL necessary to go from 10.7.5 to 10.8.5?

Presently:
Macbook Pro, Mid 2011
PT 10.3.9
OS X 10.7.5
This system is cloned, in case of emergency.

I'd like to upgrade to 10.8.5, in order to co-install PT 10 and 11.

What's the "real world" experience with trying this OS X upgrade, WITHOUT a clean install.

I'd like to have both PT10 and 11 running, so I can check out 11, make sure all the plugins work AAX 64 in 11, etc.

Thanks!

Always do a clean install. Upgrading OSX results in random errors most of the time. The kind of weirdness that just magically goes away after you bite the bullet and make the clean install. So why not do it right away..?

Thanks!

After doing the CLEAN INSTALL of 10.8.5, is it ok to use a Time Machine backup to move all the apps and data back to the hard drive?

Or, does that defeat the purpose?

If using the Time Machine backup is ok, is it necessary to uninstall PT and then re-install PT after "recalling" from the TM backup?

My maintenance is (I think) good. I run Disk Warrior frequently, etc.

I assume that qualifies as good maintenance? Anything else?

Uh oh. Sounds like I have to figure out how to manually copy all the apps and data back to the now "Cleanly installed" OS / hard drive.

Well, I guess this is the only way I ever learn how to do anything.

Although I understand the principle, I'll be goggling the web for instructions on this one!

IN the older OS X upgrades I used to, but I did a clean on mavericks to Yosemite on my laptop and then did a non-clean install with my new trash can from mavericks, and have absolutely no issues and running smoothly for about two weeks now. Doing a lot of work with clients as well. No issues with either! G

I would never risk it, but i may be just me. I do a lot of live gigs (yes, FOH with live audience) using PT as mixer so I may be too paranoid. I just always try to eliminate everything that even *may* cause a hiccup, because I only have one chance to do it right when I'm live.

Actually since you did a 'clean' install of OSX you'll want/need to reinstall all your apps and not just drag them over from your old OSX install. You may find you have several apps that no longer work under OSX 10.8.5

Well, J...Live is live, and I totally get that. There's no chance for a do-over. But even in the "non-live" world, we obviously want our systems to work as glitch-free as possible.

I often play guitar parts for people where there's an absolute "deadline". So, there's very little worse than opening PT, knowing that the people MUST have this stuff asap (a jingle session, for instance), and having issues!
