Default latency for dummies

I'm running PTfree on i-book212ram and after laying 3 tracks, the 4th is 1/2 second behind, any suggestions (please bear in mind my near comp. illiteracy ), its been a struggle just getting this far,thanks from the swamp.

I found that the % donated to CPU may not need to be as high as you think. I tried different %s and received better result with lower CPU resulting in less time delay. I suspect the DAE buffer is involved but I solved my problem this way. It is a delicate balance. There is a very good article on latency in Electronic Musician mag this month. Try recording with as few plugins as possible and install them when mixing. Good luck. Dverb is heavy on CPU but it sounds great.

thanks for the tips, heres one I found in a cakewalk chatroom;
mute the track you're recording so the computer doesnt have to play it back and record at same time. I guess it frees up prossesing and stops the latency, havnt tried in PTFREE yet but makes sense.

I've been doing that for ages now, and it's been working like a dream.

Simply mute the track you are recording, and find some other way to listen to it - i'm going into a desk, and hten into PT, so for me, i just take the PT output to the desk, and then add the two together and it works perfectly!
