Do you think this gadget would work?

I was wondering if it could be developed into a portable version - you could magically make room for yourself on buses and trains. And at those frequencies it's impossible to tell where it's coming from - especially in a reflective environment.

Keep mosquitos away too...

I heard it easily too. I'm 50 (but I don't look a day over 49 1/2).

I hear it well, and I'm close to 50, listening via iTunes on a G5 with little Chinese Altec computer speakers that are very old.

All you young kids (I never thought I'd really say that) need to take care of your ears, especially if you are in the sound business. Besides working in the studio, I also do live sound reinforcement. When I mix loud bands, I wear earplugs. Sometimes I rotate one earplug from ear to ear every other song and leave one ear open.

It's also a good idea to wear earplugs when you are placing mics on a drum kit, just in case the drummer decides to whack a few while your ear is nearby.

Don’t tell my wife that I can hear the upper frequencies. If she knew, I wouldn’t be able to get away with selective listening!

I remember way back when I was in high school, I would take in a little oscillator that I had made that had a sound similar to this ring tone. I'd stick the oscillator in my desk and turn it on. It would usually take a few minutes before anyone would notice, and then they weren't really sure they were hearing a sound or not. They'd usually blame it on the PA system.

That “little” oscillator was about twice the size of a modern cell phone, and ran on a 9-volt battery. Yes, we had batteries back then!

That is such a geeky story!

Had my check up at the optical hospital. Seems a blood vessel exploded at the back of the eyeball - bit like a mini-stroke, but in the eyeball. Healing up now, and rather unusual apparently with someone who's otherwise as healthy as i currently am. So it's a bit of mystery. So they took 15 different blood samples to try and figure out what's wrong with me.

Scary idea though - that you could be having mini-strokes all over the place for no apparent reason and not even knowing it...

im 22 so i obviously hear it, even through my cheapo 8-year-old computer speakers. it's annoying as all hell, too.

this is also clearly not at 17khz. i'd think you'd bother most anyone under age 60 with this kind of noise.

Yes very well. 37 and counting.
My normal tinnitus is about 12k so 17k comes in loud and clear on my laptop speakers.

I'm currently using some MAJOR POOP multi-media speakers, made by "Enjoy" (?), and I can hear it just fine. Oh yeah, I'm 43 years old, so I think the design engineers need to revisit this one.

Oh God did I hear it. It made my tinitus sound pleasant. I heard it, but would I recognize that as a ring tone on a phone? No way. I'd just think it was a tv or something.

It's kinda funny, I hear the begining bleep and then it sounds like it fades out and then when it stops at the end I hear it again
