Default Anybody seen this yet???

Hey guys check this out. We may be able to hook up some free extra cpu cycles via our nvidia graphcis cards.

http://www.tomshardware.com/hardnews...02_135943.html

and

http://www.bionicfx.com/

This dude has written software that turns audio functions into GPU (graphic) instructions for your video card. He says it is currently working with Ableton Live! =), and vst pluggins. I know digi may not support it, but if ableton and vst support it it may be supported by default.

He said the biggest bottleneck with this setup is the agp bus not communicating both was at the same speed, something pci-express is supposed to rectify. Wont it be cool to think about a year from now being able to run vsti instruments and vst pluggins on the gpu and pt on your cpu?

Anyway what do you guys think???

Christian

Brilliant idea, if it works.

I reckon Powercore will be watching this very closely...

this is crazy

is it supposed to be any VST or just the VST's that this company creates?
i'm guessing that the VST-RTAS adapter will make this technology really fun
for pro tools users

I'm actually suprised this hasn't happened sooner; most image manipulation algorithms are *very* similar to audio manipuation algorithms.

It's amazing that convolution in the time domain will be possible in realtime. For example, to convolve a 3 second impulse response at 44.1k with an audio stream of 6 seconds in length, it would require 7 billion mutiplication and addition operations. Even using SSE (ie. using the processor to do 4 at a time) and other tricks this is still impossible (at least on my 3Ghz PIV it was.)

An interesting idea, but what if Windows starts using the 3D processor in the next release? Boom, you're dead. And it's likely. Mac already pushes lots of ordinary display stuff onto the video card, and will do even more in Tiger. Windows will want to keep up.

From what I have seen of the next version of Windows, you *have* to have a pretty top-dog video card to run it in all it's glory. I wonder how many PT people are going to do that as opposed to running a less showy version with a lesser vid card......

They could always go multiple boot and reap the benefits of both. For instance, I'm going to install SP2 on my internet boot, and just leave the PT one alone.

So when's this new Windows coming out then? Bet it's full of Spyware....

(And why isn't spyware made illegal?)

My prediction is that someone clever will launch a combined audio/video card which will just switch modes between programmes.
