Hi Guys:

I was trying to upgrade my PC system and keep my Digi001.

I do not believe there are any problem with the AM2 socket.

Also look at Socket 939 boards. You can get them pretty cheap cause they are phasing out, but most can still run Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core CPUs. So if you end up upgrading to a 002/003 and PT7.x at some point you can start using Dual Core.

I just upgraded my Digi001 system from...

MSI K7T-Turbo2 (VIA) motherboard, Athlon XP 2400+ cpu, 512MB PC133 RAM, Win 98, PT 5.1.1

to...

Asus A8N-SLI (nForce4) motherboard, Athlon 64 3700+ cpu, 1GB PC3200 RAM, Win XP Pro, PT 6.4

And if I ever step up to the 002/003 like I was saying, I can plop an x2 Dual Core cpu in there and i'm good to go.

In any case, I'm pretty sure AM2 is perfectly fine. Others that are using it may want to back me up on this though.

You can use Dual Core AM2 with a DIGI 001. But you MUST disable one core in Protools in order for Protools to run correctly .

I answered this question in your last post.

6.4 will not run on dual core computer!

I don't own a 001 or a Dual core computer. but I beleive that disabling one core in PT's RTAS setup dialog doesnt have any effect on the processer function of the rest of the computer. In other words only PT is running on 1 core the rest of the computer can see two cores.

Fellow Protoolers correct me if I'm wrong there

I certainly would not build a single core machine at this point in time.

I'm using an old school Voodoo3 2000 16MB PCI video card. It works just fine for what I need, and doesn't tax my Power Supply or anything.

As far as this whole dual core thing, like it said, get a board that can use the Athlon 64, and also can use dual core cpus. Use the Athlon 64 cpu with your 001 and 6.4, and when it comes time to upgrade, get yourself a dual core cpu and swap it in.

I think its OK to use a actual dual core processr as long as you've set up PT to use 1 Processer in the Playback Dropdown menu. No need to swap processers down the road.

Cool, that is good to know.

Unless you want to go with the single core now to save money, then get a dual core later when the newest and greatest thing is out, and get that cpu for cheaper too. therefore saving money in the long run.

This is of course a gamble as you never know for SURE that something is going to be cheaper when you get around to wanting it. Though with electronics this happens more often then not.

I've saved a TON of money by laying a few steps behind everyone.

I second that.
I just finished building a a8n-sli deluxe w/an Athlon 4000 single core for my digi001, and it kick *****, but when I'm ready to move to the 002/003, I can used the same board and install a dual core processor and... whala!
