Default importing session data PT7

hiya,

When I import session data using exising tracks, the incoming volume automation completely overwrites the existing session volume data on the same track. That is, I've got a music track already volume automated, and when I import music from another session onto the same music track at
another location on the timeline, it rewrites the volume automation on the original section of the
track to zero. Am I missing something? I can't remember last version of protools doing this.
I've tried "replacing exising playlist" and "overlay" and the results are the same.

cheers,
John.

I don't know if this is a change in behaviour, but you could
Import as a New Track and then copy/paste or drag the new regions into the existing tracks.

I could do that, but I'm pretty sure that it used to work before. If it didn't it must have been me dreaming what a nice feature it would make!

cheers,
John.

Nothing has changed. You can (in your case must) disable the importation of “Volume Automation And Settings” data. You do this from the pop up menu found at the bottom of the Import Data window, below the track list. (Pro Tools 7.0 Reference Guide, Page 126)

Won't that then not import the mix data that I need? The way I'm reading the manual suggests that
if I import the data using the "overlay playlist" method, it should just add the automation to the existing automation, and trim any overlapping data. The regions I'm importing are 5 minutes away from the existing regions.

Maybe if this has never worked, we can have a "merge automation" setting

cheers,
John.

Since you need to retain some of your automation, while also adding new data, I’d recommend importing to new tracks and then copy and paste the needed regions (along with automation) into the existing ones. In this way, you only affect the relevant regions.

IHTH.
