Default Switching to new Mac...

I just bought a new G4 at eBay and I need to transfer everything - EVERYTHING - from my old Mac to the new one. Does anyone have any specific experience of problems or pitfalls with this - especially with Digi sound files? Hints and suggestions are welcome...

Also, can I simply remove my extra internal hard drive from the old Mac and install it in the new one or is there more to it than that?

Thanks,
D.

was your old machine a G4??

If so just use carbon copy cloner & Target disk mode. CCC is uncrippled shareware & is a far better tool than Apple's Dick Copy.

hope this helps...

the simplest way is to connect the two via ethernet(using a cat4 CROSSOVER cable) set your tcpip connection to appletalk, set sharing priveleages (file-get info-sharing) and simple copy whatever you wish from the old to the new.

You can also install the old macs HDD to the new on as a slave drive. Pin to slave and follow these insteuctions.

You don't need any special software to do either of these.

Though you've provided good comic relief, you do know that you can go back and edit the original message, right?

I would suggest connecting them via firewire directly, then restart the new mac using target mode (hold down "T" during start up. This will turn the new mac into a firewire drive, and you can proceed to moving files over to the proper places.

yes but note you can't copy system folders using this method. Although you used to be able to move system folders around at will in OS9 an OSX system folder needs 'blessed' in order to function correctly. Both Disc Copy & Carbon Copy Cloner have this capability.
