Default BFD 2 and PT10 memory issues

Just upgraded to BFD 2 from my old BFD 1.5. Really love the program and sounds. What I don't like is the ram usage of BFD 2. Have plenty of ram (32 gig) in my machine which gives me no problem when running BFD 2 in standalone but when I use it in PT 10.3.2 I start running out of memory. Is my only solution to go VE Pro 5 and host BFD there? I've read there are some supposed problems with the latest version of VE Pro 5 when it went AAX.

Hi,

Been a while since I setup BFD but have you looked at streaming the sounds instead of loading into ram option. I've got 14gig ram and 8 of that set to the timeline cache and I haven't had any memory problems when I've run BFD.

In BFD2 Prefs> Engine... Check "Load On Demand".

That's what I ended up doing. Come on 64 bit PT!

can also drop some of your velocity layers if you wish instead of load on demand if you get issues of missed triggers or anything from lod.

you can also use reaper to host it. its VERY cheap. its what i use when i have to host it.

Thanks for the help. Still trying to get my head around all the options in BFD 2 that were not available in 1 or even 1.5. Can you say embarassment of riches?

I have no idea what could be causing that, but I had used BFD2 in the past with PT8 on a 2007 Dual Core Imac, and had no problems with it, even in a large session. I had the samples on a separate drive from my audio and system drive, which I assume you're doing as well. Perhaps double check everything before jumping to VE Pro or Reaper.

Yep - separate drives for everything - system drive, samples, PT recording drive and the 2 external drives are on separate connections - one on FW800 and the second FW800 drive via a Thunderbolt to FW adapter and both are 7200 rpm drives. When I originally started with BFD2 I was loading all samples to ram and it would get to about 2 gig as shown on the BFD 2 window before throwing up the message that sample loading was being stopped due to running out of ram. PT session was taking about 1 gig according to the Apple activity monitor so combined with that, the BFD load, and what OSX wants I was probably banging up right against the 32 bit barrier.

So I ended up going to load on demand and the BFD2 kit I was using that way was able to load the 900+ meg it needed and PT ran fine. I could go to run as 16 bit which would cut the BFD load down to about 500 meg.

This is plain vanilla PT and not HD or with the CPTK on the system in my sig.

You noticed that too? Love BFD2 in standalone - really makes use of all that ram I've got in the computer that PT in 32 bit can't access. Full load on the DW kit with plenty of ram leftover. And the DW kit ain't the biggest either.
