Default Audio playback volume

Let me first say that I'm a total noob to computer recording software...I just bought pro tools m-powered essential recording studio and installed it on my laptop. On my laptop there are speakers so I can play music and YouTube videos and hear them with or without headphones. I want to record guitar and mess around producing stuff.

Anyway...I try to open it and it says..."This session is saved on a volume set to "Transfer" only. If permitted, set the volume(s) in question to "P" (Playback) or "R" (Record) in the workspace." So now I go to the workspace drop down tab and I try to change the C drive, D drive (Lenovo) and F (portable hard drive) from transfer to playback or record and a message pops up that says..."C, D or F" can not be designated as audio playback volume because it is not a fixed removable or medianet volume."

Does anyone have any idea what I can do to get past this? I was supposed to get some stuff I've been writing recorded and sent to my bandmates tonight but this is my first time messing with this software.

Thanks for the help and I apologize if this in the wrong place...

I try going to preferences to change some settings and stuff and it says I have selected an item that is only available in the full version of pro tools m-powered. It says I need to purchase pro tools m-powered to get full access to all of these preferences.

Pro tools m-powered essential is what I purchased.

Hi, Zed:

First off, M-Powered Essential is a bit different from M-Powered, as it has more limitations compared to the "full" version. That said, are you attempting to record to an external fire-wire drive? This is a must, especially for laptops.

Windows Vista Optimizations and Troubleshooting

Follow the instructions to 'Turn off User Account Control' (UAC). Turning off UAC can sometimes help with the "Session must be on an audio record volume" error.

If that still doesn't help, try also running Pro Tools as an administrator by right-clicking on the Pro Tools icon on your desktop and then choosing 'Run as Administrator'.

Yeah, I second turning off UAC... I find it really annoying in Vista and you'll run into issues when installing other software too...
