Default I need AMS help...

Hi,

Just upgraded to PT12 after being on 8 for many, many years, so I haven't had to do this in probably 8 years or more. lol

I have a Novation ReMote 25 keyboard controller and an AVID/Digidesign MIDI I/O. I installed the latest drivers for both (I realize the MIDI I/O is not supported, but I've been told it works.)

AMS recognizes them but won't allow me to make the "patch" connections. If I select: "Add new device" It will see a new controller and I can patch that to the MIDI I/O, but still no sound. When I hit a key on the controller, It receives a midi note on port 1 as indicated by a light on the midi unit.

Hitting the actual keyboard on an instrument plugin, such as a piano will play the sounds. So I guess I'm not seeing what else to do. I also have everything checked on the MIDI Input devices, and MIDI Thru is checked.

Youtube videos have not shown me the answer. Only that it "should" work much quicker than I've been able to do.

Maybe someone can help me see some other options I'm not aware of...

(I will be able to revisit this thread tomorrow, but wanted to post today so I hopefully can have some suggestions to try when I'm back in the studio)

Thanks!

A couple of things to try: first download snoize which is a free MIDI monitor program. Run it and it will tell you what, if any, messages are coming from your Novation. This will at least tell you if things are connected correctly. Also check that the Novation is set to use whatever connection scheme you're using (traditional 5 pin MIDI or USB) as not all keyboards that have both will work on both at the same time.

Second - make sure everything is talking on the same MIDI channel.

When you say AMS recognizes THEM, I think you're saying that both appear in AMS as devices, but you can't cable them. Then I would guess that you have the Novation connected via USB. If that's the case, you don't need to connect the Novation to the MIDI I/O. To hear the VI you'd be dealing with either record enabling the track or in MIDI preferences select 'first selected MIDI track' for MIDI thru.

You are correct. It is hooked up via USB cable. I did try enabling that MIDI preference, but to no avail. ((

Is the Novation available and checked in Setup -> MIDI -> MIDI Input Devices?

Well, some weird things are happening. It was available and checked. Now it isn't available. Rescanning MIDI in AMS is doing some weird stuff. It'll add a 2nd MIDI I/O, or make everything go away. Or now, it's not really seeing the Remote 25 at all. Definitely some quirky behavior going on here. Can't quite figure this out.

EDIT: I unplugged the Remote25 and plugged it back in and everything popped up as it should. And yes, it is back available under MIDI Input devices and it's checked.

You have the correct drivers for the Novation installed? Try disconnecting the MIDI I/O and restarting the computer. If you don't have any outboard MIDI gear and are just working with VIs, why connect the MIDI I/O? OTT, ???

I do believe they are the right drivers. Got them from Novation's website a couple days ago.

Re: the MIDI I/O - Good point! lol I used to have a Korg keyboard here for a long time which I hooked via MIDI. But you're right, I probably don't need it anymore. However, I still had the setup this way same way pre-upgrade and everything worked fine. I'll try disconnecting it anyway to see what happens...

And musicman691, I did get snoize and ran a test. all seemed well.

Unfortunately, unplugging the MIDI I/O and restarting didn't work either.

What VI? The only other thing I can think of is that it's some type of MIDI channel issue. Is the VI track MIDI input set to Any? Does the Novation have a factory reset function? Maybe try that.
