Has the RAM leak been fixed in 5.0.1?
Has the RAM leak in 5.0 been corrected in 5.0.1? We all know it exists (can U say ghost in the machine?)... I was just wondering if Digi has done something about it.
Digi? Thanks [This message has been edited by Pat Thrall (edited June 15, 2000).]

Re: Has the RAM leak been fixed in 5.0.1?
Yes, there were some memory leaks in 5.0. Most were based around heavy midi use. These have been fixed in 5.01.

Re: Has the RAM leak been fixed in 5.0.1?
Thanks for the reply Bob,
After running PT's for several hours on sessions that are purely audio based (meaning of course zero MIDI data), I get RAM leak behavior. One of the first signs is that the "slip" mode starts to act like "grid". It becomes very hurky jerky and does not slip at all - the remedy is to reboot PT's (client frowns). The second is that after I finish recording a track and hit stop, the track I just recorded remains pink as if I am still recording to it. Very strange indeed. The remedy is to switch to the mixer page and then switch back to the edit page (client lights a cigarette). A third one is that after a few hours of locking to tape, suddenly PT's won't lock up. Again the remedy is to reboot PT's (mix engineer has "deer in the headlights" expression). Yes, I have the latest version of firmware installed in my USD. And a fourth one is, that after recording a stereo track, only half (or so) of one of the tracks shows a region...very, very strange. The remedy is to switch to the mix window and back again to the edit window (guitar player thinks I have lost his greatest performance ever). There are several other random bizarre acts that have occurred since I started using 5.0 but I can't remember them off hand, but the above mentioned four situations happen on a fairly regular basis when I am doing long sessions. The frustrating thing is that I can't reproduce them with any specific method because they only happen over an extended period of time (4 to eight hours+). What do ya think Bob....is my 9600/466, Mac OS 8.6 with 448 MB of RAM haunted, or am I RAM leakin' like a mammajamma. Anyone else out there have any "Tales From The Ram Leak Crypt". Cheers, PT [This message has been edited by Pat Thrall (edited June 16, 2000).]

Re: Has the RAM leak been fixed in 5.0.1?
I was on the beta cycle for 5.01, and all major bugs have indeed been addressed. The slowness of 5.0 has been cured, edits don't break apart with selections anymore, automation merges in quickly again, etc etc etc.
You'll be happy. dc |

Jim,
You deserve a patience award, and I'm not being sardonic. How can you even use Pro Tools for MIDI at its current state? Applauding... ------------------ Marco Marinangeli Magelic Productions, Inc. Compression Records http://www.compressionrecords.com

Re: Has the RAM leak been fixed in 5.0.1?
Marco,
Thanks for the applause I was using Cubase Audio XT for the longest time. Steinberg stopped supporting TDM, as you know, so I jumped ship when PT 5 came out. I am nowhere near as fast with MIDI in PT5, (I'm not talking about RAM leaks here) and that's having been using it for a few months now. I am hoping (make that praying) we get improved MIDI features with the next release. Current gripes - For editing, to listen to a series of MIDI notes I have to click on each one with the grabber. Bad. Why can't I just <Tab> thru them consecutively (a la Cubase)? Also I am constantly resizing the edit view and fiddling with those pesky tiny arrows to view MIDI notes - this is wasting LOTS of time...and if you're in Jumbo mode watch out, those arrows may be gone. (I think we need some kind of MIDI edit screen) And of course where is List edit? That command- shift- click tiny keyboard thingy (I think that's it) works to select a single note, but beyond that... These are not arcane things, These are everyday meat & potatoes stuff. You have you personal favorites, I'm sure. I DO like being able to use plug-ins while I'm MIDIing. It was always a big pain in Cubase. And of course the mixing in PT is waay better than Cubase... Enough ranting for now. BTW - Marco - what are you using for MIDI? Regards |
