Early Beatles Sound
I have the Pro Tools HD Accel 2 and would like to know if someone has recreated the algorythms from the early Beatles delays and reverbs using the existing Pro Tools plug-ins that came with the system. Specifically I am looking for the delay/reverbs in songs such as If I Fell, And I Love Her, P.s. I Love You, Don't Bother Me, Hold Me tight, etc. If it was accomplished using third-party plug-ins I would like to know what they were. I am aware that there are some EMI Chandler plug-ins, but they seem to focus on 1967 and later. I prefer the earlier sound.
thanks! Jim |

Re: Early Beatles Sound
Back in those days Pro Tools was in its infancy. The only 3rd party plugins available to them were by Bomb Factory - the Joe Meek ones I believe (I'll have to re-read that "recording The Beatles" book to be sure).

Re: Early Beatles Sound
....last year, when one of my old mix-farms had a fault, it used to make this strange screeching-static sound, alot like one of Yoko's more experimental pieces..

Re: Early Beatles Sound
I actually got that vocal sound once by recording all the audio to my hard drive via firewire 800, making a copy, and then taking apart the drive. Use a twenty foot firewire cable to get some good distance (distance=delay because of the 20' latency) between the two drives, and loop it back into the first drive with another 20 footer. Once you have the drive disassembled, you can put one finger on the drive platters to slow them down to add the flange sound to the delay. Sometimes a little static adds an interesting element. Scuff your feet around the carpet a good bit. If the the delay is too fast, switch from firewire 800 to fw 400, because it's half as fast and will double your delay time.
I don't know if any of this will work with metric distances, or below the equator. As always, YMMV. peace Rob Burrell aka Mixboy

Re: Early Beatles Sound
I have heard that each version of ProTools sounds completely different and that Seagate drives sound more Retro than Western Digital. Does anyone know which version of ProTools the Beatles recorded with? and what type of hard drive did Sir G.M. prefer in those early years?
