Is this common practice to try and get PT to max out memory allocated? This is the first time I have heard of this...Maybe something I should try?
I mainly do it, so that if in the course of working I want to change my playback engine, ProTools doesn't request a restart.

I understand now. Hope Digi works out quite a few little bugs with the next cs. I am hoping for more stability with VI's. Thanks!

When it says a restart is required that by no means is for Pro Tools
you MUST re-start ( re-boot ) the CPU
if you launch PT prior to re-booting it reverts to the minimum
it has been this way for years now
Well of course. I rebooted the mac and it gives me the same BS. It will not work. Everything has been trashed. Its a daily ritual with PT.

I set my playback engine to 128 voices on 4 DSPs, with my DAE buffer at 4. This correctly allocates 180MB instead of 125MB. So even though I can't get to 300MB, I can still run my normal playback engine. Its only when I go for more that it defaults to 125MB.

I replied in the other thread as well - we're looking into what could be causing this.

I posted on this topic in another thread a couple of days ago- was wondering if it could be PPC specific or even to do with the PCIx cards as it seems like only some people are having this (very annoying) problem. I'm using OS 10.4.10 on a Dual 2.0Gig PPC G5 with 3.5Gig of ram and the problem started with the 7.4cs2 upgrade and I've tried everything but have now reinstalled 7.4cs1 which has cured the problem.

Are you possibly using a chassis as well?

Don't mean to bother you but, this is a huge issue over here both with Pro Tools and Logic using Pro Tools hardware.

Please keep us updated on this.

Thanx

Marc

OK, an update on my end.

I was able to get the 125mb to go further by doing this.

Number of voices 80 Voices (5 DSP's) instead of 96 (6 DSP's)
Sample Rate 96khz
Long (8191 Samples per channel)

DAE Playback Buffer
Size 3000ms; Level 4

Cache Size; Large (improves performance)

So, something must be going on with the 6th dsp bringing the system memory back down to 125mb's

Right now it's saying

Requires 192MB of system memory. You currently have 225MB allocated.

Oh, the most important part of this and this is why I'm posting this in the first place is because of how I did it.

OK, first, put it down to Level 2 and select the Minimize system memory allocation (takes effect at next restart)
Then put the number of voices on 80 Voices and the sample rate at 96khz and of course the DC @ Large 8191.

Pro Tools will then go through it's thing and say it needs to restart so this can take effect. Kool.

Restart cpu then pull up Pro Tools and there ya go. The system memory will now move up to 225mb.

Come on Digi, really need a fix on this. I love to use 96khz on both Pro Tools and Logic Pro but this little thing is driving me nuts. Now, let me see if this is a fiz to the 9073 errors that I've been getting like crazy.

I hope this helps...

Marc
