OSX - 001 crashing and severely distorting

I teach Audio at College level (years 11/12) and run 5 DIGI-001s. OS9x has ben great - no dramas at all. This year I bought a dual 1.25 GHz Mac and run version 6Protools LE.

This is a serious machine yet my students regularly find PT crashes and on occasions (fairly regularly actually) on playback it seems to just go mental and distort violently - hardly good for the ears or monitor speakers.

Anyone struck a similar problem and has suggestions?

I'm having a bit of trouble with my 001 and PT 6 as well. I've been getting small static "pops" on playback when I have my hardware buffer set to anything less then 256 samples. I've contacted Digi and both reps couldn't figure out what was causing the problem. Is this similar to your distortions?

I'm also have regular crashes every day. When it crashes, I have to do everything that Digi has posted in their trouble shooting guide for OS X on the DUC. Then I'm usually good for the rest of the day. But almost like clock work, the next day another crash. When it crashes, the screen dims, and a small window appears that askes me to push the restart button on the front of my computer.

Any of this sound familar?
