Default Grammy - Cool Avid History

Hey,

found this on http://www.theforce.net and thought I would share...

Skywalker Ranch almost exclusively uses the audio software package, ProTools for it's audio design, editing, and rough mixing. It was used to record and compile the soundtrack (not score) of The Phantom Menace. Further, the company who created ProTools, Digidesign, also offers a nonlinear video editing package called AVID. Both Titanic and TPM were edited using this system and from what I've read, EP2 will be as well. Frankly, if you sit through the credits of any film released in the last 5-6 years, chances are you'll see AVID credited as the editing system. Both of these systems were pioneers in bringing audio and video into the nonlinear digital world and still lead the industry amid dozens of competitors.
UPDATE:
The Phandrew Menace writes in with an anecdote:

"The article mentioned that Pro Tools was created by Digidesign, who also makes the AVID non linear editing system which is pretty much an industry standard and has been for many years. BUT, the article didn't mention another interesting Star Wars tie-in. George Lucas was one of the pioneers of what we call non-linear editing (computer based) and on the original films he used what we would consider a crude non-linear editor by todays standards. He called this system EditDroid, and a few years later he sold this technology to a company who turned it into what we now call AVID. Another way Lucas has made the world of storytelling a lot more digital."

Just think, instead of Pro Tools, we could be using Editdriod 25[.1]?

correct me if i'm wrong, but avid didn't create pro tools software or hardware. digidesign was just bought out by avid.

Actually AVID did acquire Digi. The other mistake is that the original Skywalker sound editing platform was turned into Sonic Solutions.

This is the history that I was taught in school.

ok-I'll correct you...OSC wrote the code for the first TRULY working version of ProTools for Digi...look at Deck and tell me I'm wrong. OSC was hired to write the code for ProTools II because Digi couldn't get their software to work-it's true. Of course, that was a long time ago. Remember Digi selling Deck? Then all of a sudden they dropped it? They also wrote code for the early incarnations of the Avid Media Composer. OSC was a great shop...you can thank them for the timeline interface we all are so familiar with.

DSP research near Sydney.

Graduate students form Fairlight

Droidworks hire Fairlight engineer

Build Dyaxis (4 track DAW system for PC)

Deck appears (with 8 track code?)

Digidesign purchases multi-track technology.

Fixes really bad bugs!

Introduces TDM.

Hangs in there...

Wins Grammy!

`oooO`

{my understanding}
