Default Dual Monitor card for Quicksilver

Hello

Does anyone know of a good cheap, monitor card for a 2001 Quicksilver G4 that allows for dual monitors and doesn't suck away at my system RAM?

Thank s
Chris

I use a very old ATI XCLAIM LT Pro card that has been migrating with me from (video-editing) system to system. I have no problems with PCI cards, although they're not supported by Digidesign. The savest bet is a twinview or dualhead AGP card.

ATI Radeon 9000 Pro for Mac

Got mine for $75. With the included DVI adapter you can run 2 CRT monitors (or a flat and a CRT I guess)-- something I have not done but have seen mention from others on the DUC that they are/have.

An excellent bargain and even seems to outpace GeForce Titaniums in quartz rendering (the nativescreen rendering in OSX). I'd suggest AGP as PCI cards will take power from your PCI bus and possibly give you a hit in system performance (if you're running multiple internal HD's, or a 001).

You already have dual display capabilities, you jsut need an ACD-VGA adapter.

I've been looking into this too, and it seems that the 8500 (or 9000) Radeon is a popular choice that people are using well with PT.

That adapter link said: "G4 Power Mac 867, and the G4 Power Mac 733MHZ support dual displays, but a dual display compatible graphics card must be installed." I remember looking into this originally because my 733 had two "jacks" out of the card, but all of the literature implied that it couldn't actually run two non-mirrored at the same time. I think I'm looking into a card anyway to boost performance, but I'd be interested in knowing if I have the capability already.

CWHITE - $75 sounds really inexpensive for a Radeon 9000 Mac - where did you find that? Ebay?

You're right, that is REALLY inexpensive-- that was supposed to say $175 (which included shipping) . I should really start previewing my posts. Sorry about that.

I had to look around quite a bit for the 9000-- they seem to be growing pretty scarce and many places say they're back-ordered or out of stock. I can't seem to find the receipt, but I'm pretty certain I purchased it at MacMall-- which wasn't the cheapest, but it was one of the few places I could find where they were actually in stock.

For the price, I'm really happy with it. I should also mention that I do a lot of multimedia and graphics work as well.

I believe most of the stock Quicksilvers shipped with GForce 2 cards, which only support mirrored displays.

You might be able to save a some money by just adding a used PCI graphics card to your current one, instead of replacing it with a newer and more expensive AGP card.

Clockface,

Can you do that? I can just add a second card and it will respond like a normal dual head card (ie mix window on one screen edit on another? )

If that is the case, could I just jack one from my old G3?

Also, is there anyway to use a powerbook via ethernet as a second monitor?

Thanks for all your help everyone!
Chris

As I had mentioned previously, keep in mind that your PCI bus performance will be degraded anytime you add more things to it-- which may affect the performance of your 001.

OK Here's how it works. I have a G4 Dual 800 Quicksilver. It comes stock with a 64bit Twinview. You can use 1 VGA and one ADC or DV monitor-not 2 VGAs. The only adapter I've seen to convert ADC to VGA, Dr. Bott, clearly states that it is not compatible with this video card. My solution was to use an old Ultimate Rez card from my old clone. So now I'm running 2 VGA monitors abeit I very ocassionaly get a PCI bus error, but I can live with it.
The single 800 Quicksilvers came with a slightly different Twinview card but, I'm pretty sure, can only run one monitor at a time, even though it has 2 ports.
I am also looking into an ATI 9000, if only to lighten up my PCI bus load.
And yes, I use one minitor for the edit window and one for the mix. It works great and makes things a lot easier.

That's all I know.
