Default Building a new computer - Recommendations?

Good morning it's me. The crazy one that bought the digi 001 without reading the compatibility web page and now is switching from W2k to Win98.

Ok, once again I have stepped off the edge. Just purchased an 80 gig 7200 rpm Wd Hard drive and found that my Pentium II won't support a drive bigger than 40 gig. Yes I have upgraded the BIOS but no help. Hey the drive was only $167.

Sooooo I need help in building a new box. What mother board, CPU, Memory, video card do you recommend.

Thanks

Here is what I got so far.

CPU: AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.4 GHZ

Motherboard: ABIT KR7A-133 with VIA VT8366 chip set.
(Couldn't find the VIA KT133A chip set, do you think the VT8366 will work?)

RAM: 256 Meg DDR PC 2100

Video: Aopen TNT II 32 Meg card

ATX Turbo Case w/320 Watt Ps

EXTRA: Added two more IDE ports with an Ultra 100 IDE expansion card.

Total cost so far $520

Drives: Already had 40GIG
and 80GIG WD 7200RPM hard drive was $167

Well do you think I have done well or just wasted more bucks?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Swaphappy,

Glad i didnt tick off and scare you off. As far as building a new box the people that have built these systems usually do chime in to help if you have any problems setting their config up, and anybody else here usually is happy to chime in to help as well.

I think that you will be extremely happy to have a new system over a pII to run ptle. I started off running a pII 333 and even though it worked fine for small projects with few (and i mean few pluggins) the cost of computers now is justification enough to build at least a gighrtz system. Good luck.

One last thing, if you have to build one now i understand, but you may want to wait till the xp release comes out to see what digi recommends since you do plan on upgrading to xp (i assume that you may be planning on using your new xp box, but you may decide to keep this box as pt only).

Here are the new results with 512 ram...

24 audio
46 aux
5 stock plugins on each one...

I am also running only windown 98SE straight off the disk, with no CRITICAL UPDATES AND SERVICE PACKS from Microsoft...Never connected the machine to the internet either...I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not...

Happy Prooltooling!!!
