AUX fader - plugin effect level vs volume level?
How do I make an AUX fader control the mix level of a plugin effect (like reverb)? I have two tracks routed to an AUX track with a reverb insert but the AUX fader controls the volume level of the tracks rather than the amount of reverb effect.

Re: AUX fader - plugin effect level vs volume level?
you have to automate the plugin not the send fader.
Google for "plugin parameter automation"

Re: AUX fader - plugin effect level vs volume level?
Typically you would create Sends on the audio tracks that are bussed to the plugin's aux track Input. With a plugin like a Reverb, you would then make it 100% Wet and you could then control the balance between the original source track(s) that are dry and the reverb with the mixer faders. There are other ways to set it up, but that's probably the most common way that gives you the most control. Of course the send levels will also affect the amount of reverb.

There's also a Pre/Post fader setting to consider. By default, sends are set to Post Fader meaning that the level on the source track's fader will affect the level going to the send's output - the aux track/reverb. Selecting PRE on the send's fader will send a constant level to the send's output so that moving the source track's fader won't affect the level sent to the send's output (aux track/reverb). It can all be automated as well.

Re: AUX fader - plugin effect level vs volume level?
I think this is what I'm trying to do: https://www.protoolstraining.com/blo...pro-tools.html
You are right, the audio tracks need to have sends to a bus with the reverb. I kind of have it working now. The AUX fader is controlling the dry/wet of the reverb (instead of volume). However I'm hardly hearing any reverb effect... |

OK I've got it working :) However selecting PRE on the fader doesn't seem to do anything...

Re: AUX fader - plugin effect level vs volume level?
If the track's main fader is near -0, then changing between PRE and POST is not likely to be audible. But, Pre on the send fader is different, and whether you hear the difference is a matter of what else is happening. Consider: a vocal track(feeding the main outputs) with a send feeding an aux track with a reverb plugin. If the send is Pre-fader, it will send the same amount to the reverb, no matter where you set the vocal track's main fader. With the send in Post-fade, when you move the vocal track's main fader up or down, the amount sent to the reverb will also go up or down. Post-fade means the send is taking the signal AFTER the track's main fader. Pre-fade means the send takes the signal BEFORE the track's main fader.

Getting more reverb really has to do with the gain staging of the send and aux track - if the track level is low, you'll need to turn the fader on the send up. Again, make sure the plugin is 100% wet. You can also place another plugin like a Trim before or after the reverb plugin to send more signal to the reverb or turn the reverb up after processing.
