Dither IS applied when doing "Export Selected as Files" and "Save Session Copy In" when converting from 24 to 16 bit. I hope this helps.

mike

Can the dither that Mike mentioned be turned off? I commonly print mixes back to PT through L2 and use the dither there. That means that if do "export as file" on those mixes, they'll be getting dithered twice.

How can I get around that?

Thanks,

Inaam

If you're not converting from 24b to 16b (since L2 has already done that) then they aren't being dithered.when you export.

Default "Export Selected Regions" and Dither

So I was wondering-- As I print analog mixes back into Protools @ 24bit i end up with these nice whole file regions. To make reference Cd's Id like to use the "Export Selected Regions" command from the Audio pulldown menu. Then I would select 16bit, and Stereo Interleaved so I could drop them right into toast.

However, Im guessing that these files would not be dithered down to 16. Being that its a realtime process usually, adding dither. But then again, maybe dither could be added in an Audiosuite kind of way. Im not sure really.

Help anyone?
thanks
MT

cool!...

but davip, im not sure what youre saying.. if Inaam is printing thru the L2 plugin (as i do as well sometimes) the recording is still a 24 bit file, only with dither added in, making it 16bit-ready, but not actually 16 bit yet. The "export selected files" command probably wouldnt know that the 24bit files have had dither added, so i would think it would add dither again if you choose 16bit as the conversion format..

And DigitechSppt, If the file are in fact adding dither, what dither are they using? And can the default dither-er (Id guess maybe the stock digi one) be changed?

thanks...

Dither settings including turning it on or off or selecting a default dither and bit depth is located in-> set up menu-> preferences-> processing.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I'm not clear why you would do this. If you are going to do any further processing (including level adjustment) of the 4 bit file you would need to dither again before converting to 16 bit. If you're not doing any processing, why not just print through L2 to a 16 bit file?

Because if the session is 24bit and youre printing back into that session, the file would still be 24bit, only with dither added, allowing that file to be cut to a 16bit files without truncating. Im not sure if that was what you meant tho..
