Default The waiting Hand

I am wondering how this waiting hand relates to the dae buffer allocation? With 640 ram on a 733 what would be the best buffer size to use to avoid this wait,
Thanx all,
Aj

When does it wait? After you press record, session start, processing?

It depends. if ya want more tracks and plus when mixing then use a larger buffer size, if you want less wait when starting to record or play, use a smaller size. how does it relate? it's a buffer! it has to fill before it will start. also the waiting could be a result from the maximum session size being too long.

Ajazzie.
"Limit record allocation" (or something similar) in the prefs is what you probably want, if its the wait before recording you experience. If you dont put a number in here, PT will ready the whole free space on the drive before recording. This could take a looong time. I put 10 minutes here, and if I record, say, 10 track simultaneously, it will delay recording maybe a second.

The hardware buffer size has a MUCH smaller effect on the delay than this prefs setting.

Thankyou all,
Limiting the recording size does help, I have enough ram to have smooth sailing yet still have the hand for a couple of seconds when opening a simple plug like dverb or 1 band eq, shouldnt be a problem right?
It still runs ok yet I am a bit mystified that I get the strange delays.

I have 120 meg assigned to ptle and 120 to dae on a friends recomendation, I am still reasonably new to macs but not protools.
If you can shed some light or any comments please dio, once again thankyou all, its a good thing I can get help.

AJ

Ps..if you get the chance to try the ac1 plug, its well worth a look if you are like me and love the analog sound.
