Still have not tried a SATA. Currently placing Audio drive on to the Promise controller and trying that, but I doubt it's going to do much.

Nope - no measurable difference, but I'm going to leave it on there anyway. IOW, my D drive is now on the Promise controller, with the C drive on the primary IDE by itself.

Flautista, I'd say if your $90 CPU is only getting two fewer aux channels than my $400 CPU, you're doing quite well - even if you are having to overclock it to get there. As long as it's stable at that speed and your cooling is up to the task, you're fine.

I'm not sure what results other people are getting with overclocked Barton XP 2500's are getting, but I'd say that those are very respectable results. Congratulations on a very cool system!

Default Re: Best Desktops for PTLE

Hey guys. Been upgrading to the equipment listed in this thread, but ran into a snag. I bought a Sparkle PSU from Newegg that was supposed to be pretty quiet. After replacing one, I've decided these things are just plain loud. Everything else is silent on my system. (Got the fans, heatsinks, and silentdrive from QuietPC) Anyone have a suggestion for a halfway affordable QUIET PSU that Newegg carries? (They're gonna give me partial credit for the Sparkle) Is the Enermax the way to go?? Thanks to all!!

No, it doesn't HAVE to be overclocked. Neither does the high end system... but they can be overclocked. On the $600 system, you have to have a unlocked Barton 2500. Not all of them are. I THINK any of them can be modded to be unlocked, but that's a hassle. On the Athlon 64's, overclocking is fairly easy if you know what you're doing in the BIOS settings.

I did some tweaks last night, and I hit 32 + 34 and STILL wasn't into the red on the CPU meter. Of course, I had the thing running at 2.4 GHz (220 on the FSB). I had to make some RAM timing and voltange changes to get it to boot at that speed and to run with stability, but I think I'm the new DaveC champ.

However, I was worried about CPU temps, so I dropped back to 210 on the FSB. I was running at about 54 C on the CPU at 220 FSB. Still running at around 51-52 C, but that's under the 70 C max allowed for the Athlon 64 3400 according to AMD's website technical documentation, so I feel pretty safe. Because everything seemed stable, I suppose I could jump back to 220 FSB, but my Thermaltake Venus 7+ cooler is spinning at 5.4 K + RPM's at that speed, which makes a good deal of noise.

I may look for a better / more effective / quieter cooling solution - maybe heat pipe. Don't think I want to bother with a water pumper. Any suggestions folks?

Congrats Phil, looks great to me.

You can get the new Xeos water cooling systems from www.koolance.com now for a decent price that sits on top of your existing system. Looks like a great way to go for cooling those bad boys.

Keep up the great work and lets do lunch soon.

The Enermax FMA is a good one and can be manually adjusted for noise control. The Zalman products kick butt too.
