003 Core Audio does not work with itunes or firefox

Okay so my 003 rack does not work with anything that has audio other than Logic, Pro tools, and Reason.. i've set my sound defauts to the 003, but nothing happens. it DOES note that my 003 hardware does not have (or show) any outputs.. this is strange.

i've also set my 003 to the midi and audio preferences and still nothing.

i'm using leopard, i know that the core drivers aren't supported yet, but for the past coupple days audio seemed to work, but just recently, yesterday they stopped working.

how can i fix this? i tried reinstalling core drivers, 7.4 and nothing.
i tried downloading the 7.2 pr and installed the core drivers from there and nothing.

my sound preferences say my 003 dosnt have any outputs.
it says the same for inputs on the recording tab however my talk back mike (mic in xlr port 4) seems to show signal when i tap on it.

is there anything i can do? its a real pain in the ass having to listen to a song through pro tools's work window thing.

i dont think its entirely leopard. because when i had 10.4 it did this occasionally.

This is going to sound REALLY, REALLY, ridiculous and totally long winded and dumb, but here goes......



Ok for the Core Audio issue with playback, I would have the similar problems like you guys do and here's what I did to address them.

The thing I tried after recording a session and bouncing down to a .wav or .mp3, I... like you.. would want to hear it back in iTunes or whatever player is around for that matter. When I played it with Core Audio loaded up it wouldn't work, nadda, zilch.


Solution #1. I would reboot my Mac and the first thing to load up will be the Core Audio driver, next iTunes and WOLLAH!! it plays!!! Yeah I know it sucks but that one worked.


Solution #2. This one ABSOLUTELY WORKS!!!! I went to my local Radio Shack and picked up a 1/8" stereo to RCA cable and plugged the 1/8" into my headphone output from my Mac to the input on the back of my 002R and pressed the ALT/SRC button on the front. So now, whenever I want to listen to a iTunes song or watch a Quicktime/ You Tube movie or DvD, I can simply just press that little button on the front of my 002R and crank up the volume.

It looks crazy having the cables all over the place, but it gets the job done.

I know it sounds totally weak to have to route the signals like that, but hey.... at least I don't have to re-import audio back into Pro Tools and waste disk space.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

my questino is.. i'm using 003.. and i dont have alt/src button but i have aux in...


so how can i wire the rca cables to my aux? would i need another convertor from rca to 1/4th?

i dont think my 003 has rca inputs.. theres spid/f but thats not rca..


so i would need this instead right?

You can also get 1/8" stereo to 1/4" L and R as well.. I have the 002 and not 003, is there any other type of alternate input on it?? I basically pass thru the 002 and I don't need to use PT for anything else. I'll download the manual and check back in a while.

I much prefer this method of mini plug into the 002/003 as you never suffer any "hardware in use by other program" nonsense. Been doing it this way for 4 years and have no reason to change. I did match the levels for playback.

This is directly from the 003 Manual:

Alternate Input Routing Controls
Aux In to 7/8 Switch This switch routes the Aux
In input pair directly to Inputs 7–8 of Pro Tools,
and does not send it to the Main and Alt Monitor
Outputs. This lets you route an alternate input
signal (such as a CD player) directly into
Pro Tools without the need to repatch any cables.
When Aux In to 7/8 is enabled (lit), Analog Inputs
7–8 are disabled.

That's it dude!! I'm looking at the 003 Rack diagram right now and you need 1/8" stereo to 1/4" separate L and R. You go out from the headphone jack, and or the line out from your mac to the AUX input 7/8 on the 003. Hit the ALT/SRC button on the front and your ready to go.

I've got the 003 also and do this to avoid hassle.

One point though, you do not need to deal with the 7/8 option. That's simply to direct whatever is coming to your Aux In (headphone out in your case) directly into protools 7/8.

For what you want, simply go into the Aux In on the back of the 003, and select the Aux In button on the front and your itunes or whatever will be sent to your main out.

I run from my computers soundcard into the Aux In which is basically what you're doing. If you've got two sets of monitors hooked up, you can also alternate between them with the Alt CR button on your 003. Nice way to compare your mixes bounced to MP3 on good studio monitors or cheap computer speakers at the touch of a button.

Has anyone done this with optical out from the computer to the 003? That is what I am going to try, heading out to get yet another optical cable.

You'd have to open ProTools in order to be able to route the signal through to the speakers, so what you're attempting won't work.
