Default I read about it but no fix yet

I've been very patient and private about a problem I've been experiencing with my Mac running PTle and digi 001.

The facts:
OS 9.1
Mac G4, 533, 1GB RAM
Maxtor internal system drive 30GB
Maxtor Firewire drive
IBM Deskstar 25 GB, 60GB
SCSI controller (the entry level one Apple ships with their systems)
4GB SCSI drive

All except the Firewire drive are internal

Midi Sport 2x2 USB interface
Mac USB keyboard with Mouse, and iLok USB key

The problem:

Since owning this Mac I would work on stuff for some period of time then all of a sudden either my keyboard or mouse would stop working. Most of the time I need to physically disconnect the USB connection to reset them, and get them back. But now I'm doing more MIdi work ... and when that (the Midi-sport) cuts out, it requires a trashing of software prefs, and a re-boot.

This is approaching a level of unacceptable instability ... ALMOST reminiscent of a Windows-based machine! (I'm sorry about my profanity)

Any help is good HELP!
