Default Need advice: Should I go 7.4(7.4cs10) or 8.0?

Hi,

I have been using PT 7.3.1cs5 for a "longgggg" time, along with 10.4.9 for two years.

I have read so many posts describing stability issues under 8.0.

I do not need all the bells and whistles provided with PT8.0. Curious about the bundled tuner...

So..

a) Should I buy 7.4 and go 7.4cs10, keeping my current system under 10.4.9?

b) Should I skip this chapter buy 8.0 and go directly 8.0.x , also buy OS 10.5.x ?

c) Buying 7.4, 8.0 is free?

Thanks

If your computer is able then have a dual boot! and install 8 with Leopard on another drive/partition.

don't see the point of going 7.4 personally.

8 Isn't free when buying 7.4 and you won't be able to run 7.4 with the 8 ilok auth either.

There are some RTAS issues with 8, but mostly third party VI's., which cause CPU overload messages. personally my system is fairly stable! i occasionally get the fw_callback thread crash for no apparent reason! about 1-2 times a week.

Chris

PT 8 & Leopard is a very stable environment. Here at least.

PT8-Most solid version ever for me,and rtas is good despite some problems other people seem to be having with it.Im on a harpertown macpro which helps, as i dont think my previous G5 /2.5dual would have cut it.
just update your plugins before you boot up.

Oh Thanks, guys!

I am not into VIs at all, rarely use Strike or Xpand..

Still kept my JVs and Fantoms around...

I will buy 10.5 and 8.0 soon.

Hope plugs will go fine ( TC MD3, PSP ok for sure, Mc DSP Emerald ) with no additional fees...

Just to give another perspective. I've been on a huge project for the last year and decided to lock in with 7.4 (Quad G5 PICe, Digi Expansion rack HD6). I got it not because I needed elastic audio, but I needed the most reliable system. It's been the most stable version on PT I've ever worked with (been at this since '93).

I'm sure 8 is better now, but 7.4 (cs whatever-is -the last-one) is very reliable.

I think it depends. I run a commercial studio with 2 rooms. We do a ton of ADR, mixing, scoring, etc. Stability is paramount. To that end we are sticking with 7.4 until everything looks good for 8. My clients pay for stability and the final product, not the version we are currently running. We will upgrade soon - also we use a ton of VI's - we would die without them.
