Can you translate this to non computer geeks as to what the benefit is? Thanks! (I already know what these are on their own, I just don't know what it means that they will be integrated).

no extra controller components needed so, manufactures have no reason not to include these on MoBos build with the Ivy Bridge

When or if Avid Audio takes advantage of these advances is totally another story. Currently, Avid Mbox family only just went USB 2.0. And early 2011 MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt and HD Native is a no go. So in regards of Pro Tools this news means nothing. Ivy Bridge is twelve months from release.

Not so fast, Ivy Bridge and Thunderbolt Intel says no integration with chipset.

In other words, with the native access on the PCH, USB 3.0 can run possibly a little better and stable, improving stability, while also reducing the number of chips needed on board, reducing cost as well.

Filosofem,

I've not heard anything about a thunderbolt issue with the MacBook.

There was an issue with express card and magma chassis but that's now fixed with PT 9.0.4.

Is there something else I'm not aware of?

I would really like to see both of these new technologies take off, and this seems like the best way to do it.
