Default Dial up hell

Well, here's my problem... or actually it's a couple of questions...

First of all, since I'm still living in dialup land (I've been waiting for DSL to be available in my area for 3 years now.) If
I bring my serial number to a friends can I download this upgrade, burn the file to a cd and then take it to my computer
at home and upgrade it there?

Will this effect any old version Protools sessions? (probably a stupid question but I'm asking anyway).

Also, so I upgrade my system to XP Home, then I do a regular install of 5.1.1 then do the upgrad of 5.3.1? Is that right?
I thought the problem was 5.1.1 wouldn't install on XP?

Sorry, I know I'm not the sharpest hoe in the shed but before I do my install I want to make sure I've got everything straight and
also want to know for sure that I'll be able to upgrade. I can't dowload a 50mb file from my dial up connection... it'll take 24 hours or
something like that. thanks.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">This would be both not necessary and not possible. If you upgrade to XP and then just click on 5.3 installer you should be on your way already.

Have fun

Chris,
Yes, you can download at a friends house.

I have not bothered with the 5.3.1 upgrade yet, but here's how I'd do it.

1) Completely remove 5.1.1 from your Win ME/98SE system.

2) Remove the 001 card

3) Upgrade Win XP and check that out first. Get networking/modems working. Make sure the machine seems happy.

4) Install the 001 card and go through a normal driver/app installation process.

Good luck,
Mark

Thanks everyone... I'm going to heading out at lunch to buy my copy of WinXP. I've got a couple more questions if you guys have the time... first of all... should I do a fresh install or is the upgrade stable.

also, Digidesign says to download the plugin patches.... I'm curious if this is for pay plugins only... I understand what to do w/ the D-verb... but the only plugins I have are the ones that came w/ the Digi001 ver. 5.1.1 Do I need to download all of these patches still? Thanks.

chris
I recorded 2 of my brothers bands songs this weekend, I'll get some links in the "let's hear your latest stuff" section this weekend sometime. Thanks guys

I know it's hard to be patient, but these folks are fast.

This was my 4th order from this company... highly reccomended.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I bought WinXP Home full OEM for $90 from Newegg.com. You need to buy some hardware from them to get that price, but I just ordered a $6 NIC which I needed anyway. Total cost with FedEx shipping: $104.

My only problem with newegg is that they insist on shipping FedEx and they (FedEx)don't ever seem to be able to find my house.
Funny, UPS has no problem finding me.
