Tascam US-428 and Powerbook
Does anyone have any success stories running this combo with PTFree? What OS, plug-ins, etc?
I'm 90% there with: Pismo 400mhz g3 192 megs ram os 9.0.2 tascam us428 driver v2.0 PTFree controlling Reason via IAC bus. i just get CPU load errors regularly. thanks! |

Re: Tascam US-428 and Powerbook
No success story here unfortunately. The Tascam US-428 works fine into a G3 Pismo Powerbook - but not with PT Free. I am familiar with this set up on the Pismo in the same configuration you describe. The recording is done however, into the bundled software which is Bias Peak and then imported and edited with PT Free. It's too bad this is the case. I understand Digi wanting to sell proprietary hardware, and I relalize that with the Magma chasis the Mix system runs fine on the Powerbook, but why not fill this niche as well? I'd buy it. Sooner or later the market will take care of itself, Digi might as well be the company that sells the product to fill this need.

Re: Tascam US-428 and Powerbook
I've founded on a report of the last NAMM show some interesting informations about the Tascam US-428. A software uptade coming soon (V 2.0) and with this uptade, the US-428 can run with ProTools LE and ProTools Free (and the Sound Manager is accepted). Just wait the uptade software...

Re: Tascam US-428 and Powerbook
yes, i am working with the v2.0 driver. unfortunately, its not software incompatabilities, as much as it is inefficient communication between PTF and the tascam drivers (i think). they 'work' together, but it's like selling a shoe as something to drive nails with.
hopefully there will be further updates! |

Re: Tascam US-428 and Powerbook
question for kenny1:
so you can edit fine in PTF? i get the CPU load error even in playback of as little as two tracks. i've reinstalled my whole system bare bones, with just protools and the us428 drivers, adjusted every conceivable memory allocation (PTF mem, DAE mem, DAE playback buffer, CPU usage % in PTF). what is your system setup? OS, ram allocations etc. i'd love to know. thanks! |

Re: Tascam US-428 and Powerbook
oops, forgot to ask:
when you are editing in PTF are you monitoring via the US428, or the mac's built in audio? its when i've got the audio from PTF going through the 428 that it screws up. what's really confusing is that other software (reason) plays back fine through the 428. |

Re: Tascam US-428 and Powerbook
9.0.2 is not very stable. I am able to work fine with 9.0.4 with a Pismo 400 once I upgraded.

Re: Tascam US-428 and Powerbook
yeah, that seems to help me some too. do you see a big difference with CPU load between running audio through the built in and the 428?
