Tunderbolt is a dual protocol cable, display port and PCIe.

A future Mac Pro without any PCIe slots--> Thunderbolt PCIe expansion with HD7 and BlackMagic card--> a hard drive case with multiple SATA drives --> two monitors with multiple USB x, FireWire x --> other type of I/O.

As I understand it, every peripheral that connect to Thunderbolt is a connector -> a chipset that extract PCIe protocol -> a normal PCIe to (USB, FireWire, SATA, DMX, serial, Fibre Channel, ...) circuitry.

That way Avid could make a big HD7 motherboard with only one Power plug, two Thunderbolt connectors and multiple connectors for the existing audio interfaces.

A Mac mini HD7? anyone?

If you look into this further, it may indeed be a way to attach a TDM chassis to a Mac Laptop, paving a way for a new type of TDM system in a box instead of in a card. Avid had a prototype demo (not TDM) a year ago, so they are well aware of the potential here. We will have to see if later this year results in any new TDM products...

actually, an interesting tidbit:

"While Apple may be the first to debut Thunderbolt, the technology is all Intel’s, and the company is not being quiet about which partners have jumped on board with the 10Gbps connection. Aja, Apogee, Avid, Blackmagic, LaCie, Promise and Western Digital are all among the roster of firms committed to pushing out Thunderbolt-equipped devices, which will include displays, storage devices, audio/video devices, cameras, docking stations and more." (bold emphasis mine)

The article (http://www.slashgear.com/intel-thund...more-24135907/) doesn't really say more than that, but it looks like Avid is already on this...

Hello. If you look at the thread I started on the new hardware exchange, I posted a couple of links related to Thunderbolt. In it you will see a You Tube video of that Intel LightPeak (that was the name then) demo they did with Pro Tools. They literally had a laptop hooked up to a 192 I/O which was then daisy chained to hard drives, monitors, etc. The presenter kept referring to 'prototype' hardware.
