Good point. I've thought about that as well but wanted to make sure 8 will work before spending the $.

Can I just buy the upgrade and install it alone or does 7.0 have to be in place to upgrade? If so that's fine too.

Worse case is throw a few HD's in this machine and install XP again.

the installer for 8 doesn't need 7 to be there first. in fact, you'd have to uninstall 7 before putting on 8 anyway. good luck!

It worked 'allright' with XP, but I still got quite a lot H/W Buffer errors when recording at 128 buffer. I didn't even have to think about doing anything at 64..
Now I can get as much as performance out of my machine with maximum results at 64 buffer... (with Win 7 32 bit that is...)

I've got a Dverb score yesterday of 248 (new Dverbs, PT LE 8, @ 64 buffer) instances of Dverb... Pretty nice in my opinion. As with XP I could only get to this amount with a buffer of 1024!

I'm sticking with Win 7 RC1 32 bit.. :)

This is, btw, with everything at stock setting. (RAM running to specs at 1600)

cool, thanks! i'm gonna try throwing the 32-bit RC on another drive and seeing if that makes some problems go away... i wish digi would hurry up with the official 64-bit support, though. 9gb of ram is really nice...

so i spent some time setting up windows 7 RC1 32-bit and installing PT 8 there to see if the problems i've been having were just caused by 64-bit windows 7. i loaded in a few plugins (L2007, amplitube 2, smack) to get a session i had to play back, and while i was not able to make it crash by changing buffer sizes, i WAS rather easily able to make it lock up the same way it's been doing in 64-bit. so it's not the 64-bit-ness that's causing this.

it's got something to do with the alt key. i haven't yet exactly determined what keystrokes/mouse combos do it, but i can make PT stop being able to play and refuse to let me move the cursor by messing around for a few minutes hitting play/stop with the space key, alt-scroll zooming, and shift-scroll scrolling in rapid succession (stuff that i do all the time when editing a session normally). after three or four minutes MAX of doing all that zooming in, playing, stopping, scrolling, etc., it happens. it acts like the alt key is stuck down somehow.

so i started uninstalling plugins one by one. i thought at first that it was amplitube 2 causing it, but then i got it to freeze up without that.

i wound up uninstalling every single plugin i had, including the stuff that just came with pro tools originally, and after that, when in my DAE/Plug-Ins folder there were only 5 files:

DigiReWire.dpm
DigiReWire.dpm.rsr
Elastic Audio.dpm
Elastic Audio.dpm.rsr
iZotope_Radius_Win32.dll

it still happened. so i moved all of those files to the unused plugins folder, and i was STILL able to make PT lock up.

when i hit alt normally, before anything weird happens in PT, the File, Edit, View, etc. menus would still get underlines under them like usual. however, once this bug is tripped, the underlines only appear while i'm holding the alt key down. once i let go of alt, they go away, which doesn't normally happen. even in other programs once this happens, they still act normally. just PT is messed up.

i'm using a brand new "microsoft natural ergonomic keyboard 4000", so it's not likely to be the keyboard key itself sticking. so it's either a windows 7 bug (it happened in beta build 7000 as well as now in rc build 7100) or more likely, a pro tools 8 bug. it happened in 8.0 and 8.0cs2.

i shot some video (http://tinypic.com/player.php?v=e7ymja&s=5) to show what happens after it gets messed up (in win7 32). any suggestions on what might be causing this would be appreciated!

In Virtual XP you have to increase the amount of RAM it has access to, it defaults to 256 MB...

What Im wondering is if you can have 64 bit Win 7 and then have XP mode with access to 1 or 2 gb of RAM and run PT8... Unfortunately I don't have a spare machine to test with, anyone wanna give it a shot?

I will have a fiddle with virtual XP in a while, but I don't think it will work. You can forward USB devices to virtual XP but not Firewire , and im on a profrire2626 :/

i'll try to give it a shot later. but this bit from the article makes me think this might not be a panacea (emphasis mine):

Quote:
Performance-wise, XPM does not seem to stack up to VMWare in some aspects. Running Counter-Strike 1.6 under XPM would crash the entire application, but on VMWare, it would run in software rendering mode and is playable without any problems. However, running IE6 did not pose any problems at all. Microsoft “did” state however, that Windows XP Mode was not designed for any media or hardware intensive apps.

@msg6794

Have you checked the default win 7 keyboard shortcuts compared to what you do in PT8? Perhaps it could be a conflict with aero as well. I think they have changed the general hotkeky layout a bit around from previous versions. Just a thought.

This post list a few http://www.webtlk.com/2009/02/05/key...for-windows-7/ and in one of the comments it is mentioned that ctrl+alt+e launches explorer, so maybe it could be something like that causing it?

Damn... Im using a PF2626 also

If your system's default soundcard (in Win 7) is the PF2626, could virtualized programs (in XP mode) not give you any audio?

I wish this would work, PT is the only thing keeping me on a 32 bit OS
