I was thinking the same as Bob
That spread out minis should be capable of the load
downside, no second NIC

I have no doubt that the new trash cans are super fast. From what I've been reading is that few applications are optimized for this beast. Time will tell.

looking at the price tag, wouldn't the "old" 12-core compared to the 6-core trash-can be the realistic comparison?

AFAIK, the 12-core easily beats the small trash can from what I've read in benchmark. plus the other features you get on the same ticket:

3 PCIe slots built in. (save another 1k-1,5k$ on an expansion chassis)
4 drive bays on board.
optical drive bay built in (not important but still...)
put in your favorite graphics card. and easily extend multiple displays from machine-room to work-room.

If I had to buy a mac NOW I know what I'd do and then I'd look again in 3-4years

I liked this visualization of the situation:

(you need to add the noisy expansion chassis to the image in your mind ;-) )

This is why I've taken a leap and installed a Windows system in a new room. Very, very happy with it so far. Fast, quiet, spacious. Lots of plugin choices today, getting better all the time. Total cost less than a new Mac Pro. Really, it is fast!

Been using the new 6 core Mac Pro for heavy video/film work and it kills my old Mac Pro 12 cores...no comparison!!! i mean wayyy faster and more stable...very happy so far.

I will switch my HDN rig (from the 27'' iMac and old MacPro 12 cores) to the new 6 cores MacPro when i have some downtime and will let you know how it performs with PT.
