Default Compressor & Threshold

I'm having issues wit this. I know how much release i want and attack and all that.
But how much threshold and ratio do i put for a full mix and also for basic kicks and snares.
What are the basics here for that. I find that compressor always takes alot from my kick and snares on my main mix when i add. I usually have threshold around -31 to -35 with ratio of 3:1. On my kicks i have it -31 with 4:1 ratio. Can ya'll explain me the basic concept behind the ratio and threshold or compressor in general and give me some basics on it to like what do u usually put on a kick or on the master fader main mix.

Yeah i've read and understand what it does. But I just want a basic. They explain stuff as if you know what they're talking about already. How do i know how much threshold i need to put? How do I know where it's peaking?? Like i know when its clipping its peaking i know that.. But i mean it talks about the peaks and threshold

Well, if you want instant results, use the Presets.

Or ...this thread might be of use.

Or ...this book by Michael Stavrou, featuring a great chapter on "Cracking Compressors".
